Important information about your Toyota
Occupant restraint systems
Toyota encourages you and your fami ly to take the time to
read Section 1−3 of this Owner’s Manual car efully. In
terms of helping you understand how you can receive the
maximum benefit of the occupant restraint systems this
vehicle provides, Section 1 3 of this Owner’s Manual is−
the most important Section for y ou and your family to
read.
Section 1−3 des cri bes the function and operation concern-
ing seats, seat belts, SRS airbags and child restraint sys-
tems of this vehicle and some potential hazards you
should be aware of. These systems work together along
with the overall structure of this vehicle in order to provide
occupant restraint i n the event of a crash. The effect of
each system can be enhanced when it is used properly
and together with other systems. No single occupant re-
straint system can, by itself, provide you or your family
with the equal level of restraint which these systems can
provide when used together. That is why it is important for
you and your family to understa n d the purpose and proper
use of each of these systems and how they relate to each
other.
The purpose of all occupant restraint systems is to help
reduce the possibility of death or serious injury in the
event of a collision. None of these systems, either i ndivid-
ually or together, can ensure that there is no injury in the
event of co wever, the more you know aboutllision. Ho
these systems and how to use them properly, the great er
your chances become of s urvi ving an accident without
death or serious injury.
Seat belts provide the primary restraint to all occupants of
the vehicle, and every occupant of the vehicle should wear
seat bel ts properly at all times. Children should always be
secured in child restraint systems that are appropriate for
their age and size. SRS (Supplemental Restraint System)
airbags are, as their names imply, designed to work with,
and be supplemental to, seat belts and are not substitutes
for them. SRS airbags can be ver y effective in reducing
the risk of head and chest injuries by preventing contact of
the head and chest with interior portions of the vehicle.

In order t o be effective, the SRS airbags must deploy with
tremendous speed. The rapid deployment of the SRS air-
bags makes the SRS airbags themselves potent ial sources
of serious injury if an occupant is too close to an airbag,
or if an object or some part of his or her body has been
placed between the occupant and the airbag at the time of
deployment. This is just one example of how the instruc-
tions in Section 1−3 of this Owner’s Manual will help en-
sure proper use of the occupant restraint systems, and
increase the safety they can prov ide to you and your fami-
ly in the event of an accident.
Toyota recommends you to read the provisions in Section
1−3 carefully and refer t o them as needed during your time
of ownership of this vehicle.
Accessories, spare parts and
modification of your Toyota
A wide variety of non genuine spare parts and acces sories−
for Toyota vehicles are cur rently available in the market.
Using these spare parts and acc essories which ar e not
genuine Toyota products may adversely affect the safety of
your vehicle, even though these parts may be approved by
certain authorities in your country. Toyota therefore cannot
accept any liability or guarantee spare parts and accesso-
ries which are not genuine Toyota products, nor for re-
placement or installation involving such parts.
This vehicle should not be modified with non−genuine
Toyota products. M odification with non−genuine Toyota
products c ould affect its perf ormance, safety or durability,
and may even violate governmental regulations. In addi-
tion, damage or performance problems resulting from the
modification may not be covered under warranty.

On pavement and off road− −
driving tips
This vehicle belongs to the utility vehicle class. Utility ve-
hicles have a significantly higher rollover rate than other
types of vehi cles. This vehicle will handle and m a n e u ver
differently from an ordinary passenger car because it is
desi g n e d for off−road use also. In addition, this vehicle
has a higher ground clearanc e and center of gravity than
t hat of an ordinary passenger car. This vehicle design fea-
ture causes this type of vehicle to be more likely to rol-
lover. Failure to operate this vehicle correctly may result in
loss of control, accidents or vehicle rollover causing death
or serious injury. Be sure to read “Off road vehicle precau-−
tions” on page 184 in Section 2 and “Off road driving pre-−
cautions” on page 203 in Section 3.

Without wireless remote control system
With wireless remote control system
Your vehicle is supplied with two kinds
of keys.
1. Master keys (black)—
These keys w o rk in ever y lock. Your
Toyota dealer wi ll need one of them to
make a new key with a built−in trans-
ponder chip.
Since the side doors can be locked
without a key, you should always carry
a spare key in case you accidentally
lock your keys inside the vehicle.
2. Sub k ey (gray)—
This key will not work in the glove box.
To protect items locked in the glove
box when using valet parking, leave
the sub key wi th the attendant.
A transponder chip for engine immobilizer
system has been placed in the head of
the master and sub keys. These chips are
needed to enable the system to function
correctly, so be careful not to lose these
keys. I f you make your own duplicate key,
you will not be able to cancel the sys tem
or start the engine.
NOTICE
When using a key containing a trans-
ponder chip, observe the following
precautions:
zWhen starting the engine, do not
use the key with a key ring resting
on the key grip and do not press
the key ring against the key grip.
Otherwise the engine may not start,
or may stop soon after it starts.

zWhen starting the engine, do not
use the key with other transponder
keys around (including keys of oth-
er vehicles) and do not press other
key plates against the key grip.
Otherwise the engine may not start,
or may stop soon after it starts. If
this happens, remove the key once
and then insert it again after remov-
ing other transponder keys (includ-
ing keys of other vehicles) from the
ring or while gripping or covering
them with your hand to start the
engine.
zDo not bend the key grip.
zDo not cover the key grip with any
material that cuts off electromagnet-
ic waves.
zDo not knock the key hard against
other objects.
zDo not leave the key exposed to
high temperatures for a long period,
such as on the dashboard and hood

KEY NUMBER PLATE
Your key number is shown on the plate.
Keep the plate in a safe place such as
your wallet, not in the vehicle.
If you should lose your keys or if you
need additional keys, duplicates can be
made by a Toyota dealer using the key
number.
We recommend writing down the key num-
ber and storing it in a safe place.
The engine immobilizer s ystem is a
theft prevention system. When you in-
sert the key in the ignition switch, the
transponder chip in the key’s head
transmits an electronic code to the ve-
hicle. The engine will start only when
the electronic code in the chip corre-
sponds to the registered I D code for
the vehicle.
The system is automatically set when t he
key is removed from the ignition switch.
The indicator light will start flashing to
show the system is set.
In the following cas es, contact your Toyota
dealer.
DThe indicator light stays on.
DThe indicator light does not start flash-
ing when the key is removed from the
ignition switch.
DThe indicator light flashes inconsistent-
ly.
Inserting the registered key in the i gnition
switch automatically cancels the system,
which enables the engine to start. The
indicator light will go off.

When all the side doors and back door
are unlocked simultaneously with a wire-
less remote control key, the center interior
light, personal lights and ignition switch
light come on for about 15 seconds before
fading out, even if the door is not opened.
(For details, see “Interior li ghts” on page
102, “Personal lights” on page 103 and
“Ignition switch light ” on page 104 in Sec-
tion 1−5.)
You have 30 seconds to open a door after
using the wireless remote unlock feature.
If a door is not opened by then, all the
side doors and back door will be automati-
call y locked again. At this time, one beep
will be heard, and the turn signal lights
flash once.
The timing for the automatic door lock
function can be changed. For details, con-
tact your Toyota dealer.
If the “LOCK” or “UNLOCK” switch is kept
pressed in, the loc king or unlocking opera-

With the driver’s door opened—
1. Insert the ignit ion key and remove it.
2. Within 5 seconds, insert t he ignition
key again and turn it to the “ON” posi-
tion.
3. After 10 seconds, pus h the same
“LOCK” or “UNLOCK” switch twice
within 10 seconds.
Two beep sounds infor m you that the
program has been switched on or off.
If this procedure is not foll o w e d exactly,
the beep will not operate as expected.
Check the beep ON/OFF operation by
pushing the switch after you finish this
procedure. If the beep does not operat e
as expect ed, r epeat this procedure from
step 1.
For replacement, use a CR1616 lithium

Window lock
switch
Driver’s door
Passengers’ doors
The windows can be operated with the
switch on each si de door. The passen-
ger windows can also be controlled by
the switches on t he driver ’s door.
The power windows work when the ignition
switch is in the “ON” position.
Normal operation: The window moves as
long as you hold the switch.
To open: Push down the switch.
To close: Pull up the switch.
If you push in the window lock switch on
the driver’s door, the passengers’ windows
cannot be operat ed.
Automatic operation (driver’s window):
Push the switch completely down or pull
it completely up, and then release it. The
window will fully open or close. To stop
the window partway, lightly mov e the
switch in the opposite direction and then
release it.
Jam protection function: During automat-
ic closing operation, the window stops and
opens half way if something gets caught
between the window and window frame.
If the window receives a strong impact,
this function may work even if nothing is
caught.
Key off operation: If all the side doors
and back door are closed, they work for
43 sec onds even after the igniti on switch
is turned off. They stop working when the
either front door is opened.

OPERATING FROM OUTSIDE
The driver ’s window can be operated
with the key inserted in the driver’s
door keyhole.
To open: Turn the key fully backward and
hold it.
To close: Turn the key fully forward and
hold it.

This feature can be disabled. For details,
contact your Toyota dealer.
CAUTION
To avoid serious personal injury, you
must do the following.
DBefore you close the power win-
dows, always make sure there is
nobody around the power windows.
You must also make sure the
heads, hands and other parts of the
bodies of all occupants are kept
completely inside t he vehicle. If
someone’s neck, head or hands get
caught in a closing window, it
could result i n death or serious in-
jury. When anyone closes the power
windows, make sure he or she op-
erates the windows safely.
DWhen small children are in the ve-
hicle, never let them use the power
window switches without supervi-
sion. Use the window lock switch to
prevent them from making unex-
pected use of the switches.
DBe sure to remove the igni tion key
when you leave your vehicle.
DNever leave anyone (particularly a
small child) alone in your vehicle,
especiall y with the ignition key still
inserted. Otherwise, he/she could
use the power window switches and
get trapped in a window. Unat-
tended person (particularly a small
child) can be involved in a serious
accident.
DNever try jamming any part of your
body to activate the jam protection
function intentionally, as it could re-
sult in a serious injury.
DThe jam protection function may
not work if something gets caught
just before the window is fully
closed.
