TECHNICAL NOTES
Active Constituents
Each 5 mL contains:
Phthalylsulfathiazole 250 mg
Kaolin-light 500 mg
Hyoscine methobromide 1 mg
Mono sodium glutamate 25 mg
Potassium gluconate 50 mg
Calcium gluconate 100 mg
Indications
Bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract in dogs and cats.
Actions
Phthalylsulfathiazole is a sparingly soluble sulfonamide which is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It has very low toxicity
and the small amounts which are absorbed are rapidly excreted in the urine. It is bacteriostatic to a number of organisms which cause
enteric infections, including , and .Escherichia coli Shigella Salmonella
Kaolin is of value in the symptomatic treatment of enteritis and allied conditions as it absorbs toxic substances from the alimentary
tract and increases the bulk of the faeces.
Hyoscine methobromide has an anticholinergic action which serves as an antispasmodic and helps to suppress gastric secretion.
Electrolytes have been included in the formulation to counteract the losses of potassium, sodium and chloride ions caused by
diarrhoea and increased permeability of the colonic mucosa.

Dosage and Administration
Administer orally
Dogs: 5 mL/5 kg bodyweight four times daily
Cats: 2.5 to 5 mL four times daily

If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre on 13 1126.
