TECHNICAL NOTES

Active Constituent

Bacitracin zinc 500 IU/g

Neomycin sulfate 5 mg/g

Polymyxin B sulfate 10,000 IU/g

Actions

The three antibiotics are collectively active against a very wide range of pathogenic organisms. Bacitracin (as the stable zinc salt) is

active against many Gram-positive bacteria including Staphylococci, haemolytic and non-haemolytic Streptococci, Clostridia of the

gas gangrene group and certain Gram-negative cocci. Unlike penicillin, bacitracin is not destroyed by Gram-negative bacteria and so

can be used in certain mixed infections where penicillin would be inactivated.

Polymyxin B sulfate has a bactericidal action on most Gram-negative organisms, especially Klebsiella aerogenes, K. pneumoniae,

Escherichia coli, Shigella spp. and Its activity is not aﬀected by the size of the bacterial population and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Neomycin sulfate is a broad spectrum antibiotic eﬀective against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms, including

Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Strep. pyogenes, E. coli Proteus vulgaris, Ps. aeruginosa and some strains of and certain

Actinomycetes Neomycin sulfate is not inactivated by bacteria or pus..

Indications

For treatment of ocular and aural infections due to susceptible organisms in dogs, cats and horses.

Directions for Use

Apply to the aﬀected area as required. Eye ointment should be applied as frequently as each hour or a minimum of twelve times a day.

Use ointment promptly when opened to minimise the likelihood of contamination.

Meat (horses): Do not use less than 28 days before slaughter for human consumption.
